It\u2019s been a long year and we\u2019re winding down to a time where kicking off your shoes, unravelling those beach towels and basking in the sun is the only thing on the agenda. So, if you\u2019re heading away this holiday don\u2019t let the stress of maintaining your home ruin your holiday.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve put together these three top-tips to allow your brain to switch to holiday mode, effortlessly.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Outage proof your frozen food<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    With load-shedding on the rise, the power may go out without you knowing about it and even if you do, there is no real way to check. Usually, this wouldn\u2019t matter but if you\u2019ve got a freezer full of food there\u2019s no way to know if it\u2019s still okay or if\u2019s been defrosted, re-frosted and needs to be binned.<\/p>\n

    Try out this nifty hack, fill up a transparent cup of water, freeze it and before you leave on holiday pop a coin on top. If the power goes out while you\u2019re away the ice will melt, and the coin will drop to the bottom of the glass. Unfortunately, if you find the coin at the bottom of the cup, you might want to consider binning the lot. If you find the coin where you left it, don\u2019t stress your freezer goods are just how you left them!<\/p>\n

    1. Keeping your plants alive<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      There\u2019s nothing worse than coming home from a lovely holiday to find the plants you\u2019ve been nurturing all year, dead. If paying someone to water your indoor and outdoor container plants is out of your budget, then a great alternative would be to consider the following<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Use a potting mix with moisture-retaining polymers (or add polymers to the mix). These compounds retain water for later use by thirsty plants.<\/li>\n
      • Move your plants out of direct sunlight behind windows with sheer curtains is great spot.<\/li>\n
      • Place plants in the tub. Wet a few towels and place them flat in the bathtub, plug secured. Place pot plants on the towels \u2013 the plants will absorb water when they need it, placing all of the plants close together will create the humidity they love.<\/li>\n
      • For those of you with gardens, investigate getting an automatic irrigation system. Simply set a timer and let technology take care of it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        1. Safety first. Saving always.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            \n
          • If you live in a secured complex or boomed off area, ensure you give the security your contact numbers in case they need to get in touch with you urgently.<\/li>\n
          • If you\u2019re going away for a longer period, ask a friend or family member to check on your house now and then<\/li>\n
          • Consider switching off all lights or installing a timer switch to automatically switch the lights on and off at the desired time.<\/li>\n
          • Ensure your geyser is switched off, your electricity bill will thank you<\/li>\n
          • Unplug all non-essential electrical items<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            We\u2019ll throw in a bonus tip! Clean your house before leaving for your holiday. There is nothing worse than coming home from a relaxing holiday as the back-to-work blues are about to kick in and still having to clean your house!<\/p>\n
